Mamals started out in a basement in Toronto, when husband-wife team James and Mary Boyd decided to write some songs together. James wrote the music, Mary wrote the lyrics, and friend Clay Place Jones (Huddle) brought his musical magic to the songs and arrangements. Then they decided to get their community involved, and a choir of 20 people formed.
A friend played the cello. Other friends added some drums, and trumpets. The choir practiced over a number of months, and on a bright Fall day in 2018 came together to record the glorious backing vocals. The finished project is a beautiful collection of melodic, lyrical and uplifting songs.
The collective’s debut EP, Mamals, was recorded at Blue Rodeo’s studio, The Woodshed with engineer Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, The Violet Archers) and is being released on January 25, 2019.
The EP was Mixed and Mastered by Ian Bodzasi (Katy Perry, Nelly Furtado, Coleman Hell, Sum 41, Sam Roberts, Ronnie Hawkins).
